Curriculum: Curriculum of Prison Guard 2015/2016

Basic Studies After completing the module a student:
• knows the structure and traditions of the prison service;
• conveys the core values of the prison service;
• recognises the main aspects influencing an individual’s organisational behaviour (motivation, values, work stress, conflicts etc.), and explains them on the example of prison service;
• is capable of controlling his/her behaviour according to the general requirements for etiquette and ethical requirements set for a prison officer;
• uses the computer for finding reliable information and for formatting speciality related documents according to the rules set.
Prelim
Implementation of Imprisonment Related Legal Knowledge After completing the module a student:
• knows the Imprisonment Law and other acts of law regulating the implementation of imprisonment in the scope of the professional tasks of I and II class prison guards;
• evaluates problematic situations encountered when fulfilling the tasks of a I or II class prison guards basing on the acts of law;
• has general knowledge about human rights, and can link these with the professional tasks of I and II class prison guards;
• has general knowledge about the acts of law regulating public service in the scope necessary for I and II class prison guards;
• follows the rules for wearing the uniform.
Exam (vocational)
Communication with an Inmate and the Resocialisation Process of an Inmate After completing the module a student:
• understands the biological, social and psychological factors influencing human behaviour;
• efficiently implements different ways of communication and options for solving conflicts when working in prison;
• has an overview of the theoretical models explaining criminal behaviour;
• understands the goal and measures of the re-socialisation process of imprisoned persons.

Use of Self-Defence and Weapons and the Providing of First Aid After completing the module a student:
• passes the physical test for prison officers;
• implements the main techniques of security tactics and of self-defence;
• uses handcuffs, telescopic baton and gas weapon effectively and according to the requirements set;
• is familiar with the weapons allowed in prison service, knows the principles of use of the latter and the safety requirements;
• uses the fire arms allowed in prison according to the requirements set;
• assesses the need for using first aid and implements essential lifesaving first aid techniques.

Surveillance Activities After completing the module a student:
• can, as a member of a shift, take over a shift in all surveillance areas (indoor and outdoor surveillance; temporary surveillance area), and carry out actual and emergency surveillance procedures during his/her shift, incl. filling out the documents related to the carrying out of surveillance activities;
• demonstrates tactical escorting of inmates in and out of the prison, of a means of transport and of the persons visiting the prison, he/she also knows the basics of escorting and can implement the peculiarities stated in the accompanying documents when fulfilling the task of escorting;
• efficiently searches prisoners, objects and people of the prison by both frisking and using technical means, he/she also knows the items and substances considered illegal in prison, and can fill out the documents related to searches;
• has knowledge about the work of communication, video, surveillance and security systems used in prison, can use the means of communication used in prison service and conduct a communication session, incl. forwarding relevant information about an emergency situation in prison or about carrying out an actual activity in prison;
• acts as a first responder in case of an emergency situation and solves a situation as a member of a team.

Internship After completing the module a student:
• individually fulfils different assignments of a guard;
• is assertive and gives orders to prisoners both in Estonian and Russian;
• individually composes the surveillance related documentation that is in the scope of a guard;
• analyses the implementation of imprisonment law when fulfilling his/her everyday assignments.

Implementation of the Notification Obligation After completing the module a student:
• gives detailed and clear description of events, items and persons;
• composes a written summary of a text.

Offences and Punishments for Them After completing the module a student:
• knows main terms and principles in Penal Law;
• knows the main principles of penalisation, relates these with fundamental rights;
• has an overview of imprisonment in Estonian legislation.

Connections between People and Society After completing the module a student:
• has acquired the knowledge and skills needed for critically giving sense to social and cultural phenomena, and generally understanding the methods and theories used in sociology;
• has an overview of the main areas of research in sociology, of the main problems and of the different ways of interpreting social phenomena;
• can recognise and express the diversity of opinions and attitudes characteristic to a democratic society.

Continuing Course of Professional Russian After completing the module a student:
• implements Russian concerning surveillance in communicational situations in service.

Execution of Imprisonment in Case of Young Prisoners After completing the module a student:
• generally understand the theory of youth imprisonment;
• knows the principles of youth imprisonment in Estonia;
• knows the practice of different countries when punishing and imprisoning the youth is considered.

Solving of Incidents in a Team After completing the module a student:
• in a team composes an efficient plan of action in order to carry out surveillance activities in a dangerous situation;
• demonstrates the tactical implementation of surveillance activities while being an active member of a team.

Security Tactics After completing the module a student:
• according to the regulations uses force and the special equipment and means of restraint used in prison to protect himself/herself.

Final Examination Upon completing the final examination a student:
• uses the knowledge acquired from the constitution, fundamental rights and from the acts of law regulating imprisonment and the prison service;
• uses the armoury and special equipment of prison and the means of restraint;
• demonstrates the skill of carrying out surveillance activities.
