Subject 'Actual Problems of Criminology and Penal Policy'Name in Estonian: Kriminoloogia ja karistuspoliitika aktuaalseid probleeme
General descriptionTo provide the students an overview of the conceptual
principles and the methods of analysis of contemporary criminology and the ability to implement them in national and international law enforcement related activity upon combating offences; also of the different starting points shaping the penal policy and of the objectives of imprisonment as a part of the penal policy; Study outcomeIs able to analyze a criminal behavior related situation from the law enforcement
point of view and to offer solutions; Is able to synthesize and to evaluate the general development in internal and in international law enforcement and crime; Understands the objectives and the theoretical bases of the penal policy of the state, and among other things is familiar with the penal policy related measures directed towards risk groups; Has an overview of the different directions and models of penal policy used in world practice; Understands the importance of alternative punishments and is aware of different regulations as a part of the penal policy; Has an overview of the factors influencing the dynamics of the number of imprisoned persons and is able to characterize them.
